Fiori’s is undeniably an Anchorage institution. Tucked into the middle of a residential neighborhood, it has that classic East Coast family-style Italian restaurant feel and a reputation built largely around its extensive whiskey list and bar program.

A few things to know before visiting: they don’t take reservations, it’s strictly first-come, first-served, and they won’t seat you until your entire party arrives. Parking can also be tight since the restaurant sits right in the middle of a neighborhood block.

We finally had a chance to visit and were hoping to enjoy the legendary bar program before dinner, but unfortunately the bar area was closed for a private function that evening. Once our full party arrived though, we were seated immediately.

The space feels like an old family home filled with eclectic décor, memorabilia, and vintage artwork. While you wait, take a moment to look over their impressive spirit collection.

Service throughout the evening was very friendly, attentive, and efficient. A true bright spot.

The menu is exactly what you’d expect from an old-school American Italian restaurant, with sections broken out by protein (chicken, veal, beef, seafood) along with pasta and pizza.

We started with escargot, shrimp scampi, stuffed mozzarella bread, fried calamari, and the prosciutto pizza. This is comfort food through and through: big portions, lots of butter, and plenty of grated parmesan. The seafood was nicely cooked and the stuffed bread was clearly house-made, but the pizza was overloaded with cheese and the crust was forgettable. The biggest miss was the calamari, which tasted like a pre-breaded frozen product.

For entrees we covered the spectrum with veal, the prime rib special, and several pasta dishes. All entrees come with a starter salad and beef dishes include pasta or vegetables. Portions are very large, but execution was uneven. The pasta was overcooked and swimming in sauce, the vegetables were over-steamed, and many of the sauces lacked depth.

We asked about dessert but were told they were all frozen, pre-made options, so we passed.

For a place with so much history and local loyalty, the quality of ingredients and execution was surprising. The friendly service and nostalgic atmosphere are clearly the star ingredients here. I’d return to experience the bar program when it’s open or for one of their Whiskey Tastings, but it’s not somewhere I’d likely come back to for dinner.

Mariah’s Journey

We spent 2.5 hours here and it was honestly one of the worst restaurant experiences we’ve had in Anchorage.

When we got there, only five people were ahead of us, but we still stood on our feet in line for an hour while half the restaurant had empty tables. By the time we were finally seated, we were starving. It then took 20 minutes just to get water and another 7 minutes before we could even order.

We ordered the cheese stuffed bread ($12), jalapeño poppers ($11), Caesar salad ($10), clam chowder, chicken Alfredo ($26), and the halibut almond crust pasta ($38).

The Caesar salad was very basic. The jalapeño poppers were just okay. The clam chowder wasnt good. The cheesy garlic bread was the only thing we liked. The chicken Alfredo was the blandest pasta I’ve ever had. Chicken looked boiled. Olive Garden would have been way better than this. We also weren’t allowed to order a side of marinara for the bread because the kitchen was “too busy”.

The halibut pasta had a very sweet, strange flavor and my husband knew he didn’t like it after one bite. When he asked to have it taken off the bill, the waitress questioned why he took a bite… which felt awkward and dumb. You have to taste something to know if you like it. We were polite about everything, but the communication from our server felt off.

Overall, the food was terrible for how expensive it was, the service was extremely slow, and the whole experience was frustrating. We definitely would not come back. Left us hungry and like we waisted our one date night after a long hard week of work. We’re pissed and wish we wouldve paid $0.
